What is it and how can I use it to become a better artist?
Kaizen is the Japanese word that simply means “continuously changing for the better.” The word refers to any improvement, one-time or continuous, large or small.
The Kaizen for the artists and painters approach consists of 10 keys to continuously improve performance.
Key 1: Cleaning, Organizing and Maintaining Equipment (Conserving Energy and Materials)
Key 2: Improving Lesson Activities (Workshops)
Key 3: Creating Value Analysis (Methods Improvement)
Key 4: Time Control and Commitment (Learning when to say Yes and No!)
Key 5: Quality Assurance System (Critiques, Mentors, Feedback opportunities)
Key 6: Developing Your Supplies (Eliminating supplies that don’t work, trying new ones)
Key 7: Skill Versatility and Cross-Training (Practicing different mediums from different instructors)
Key 8: Production Scheduling
Key 9: Efficiency Control
Key 10: Marketing & Branding Systems (Sharing your story & helping others grow.)
Want Better Art?
Behave like a successful artist.
Behavior is simply building good habits. Using time wisely. Taking ownership of every hour of every day.
Feel like there’s not enough time to practice your art?
To get the most out of your time, you need to have lots of energy.
And the way to have lots of energy is by taking care of your health.
And the way to take care of your health is to make it a priority and plan your life around…
- Sleeping well through the night
- Eating nutritional foods
- Drinking high-quality hydration
- Taking great supplementation
- Exercising on a regular basis
Because that in itself is going to give you a lot more energy, and when used correctly (practicing your art), it will give you the illusion of more time. In fact, you will be more productive making art, because you will be more focused and you will have more potential for good output, and the more output you have the better your result will be.
Some are easier than others. Before I left the States, I organized and cleaned out my studio. I tossed brushes I’d ruined, and organized paintings and materials. I’ve missed painting and get inspired everyday as I look at so much art. It’ll be interesting to notice when I return if I miss anything I tossed.
Such good advice. Definitely something I will monitor to incorporate into my daily routine of art making. thank you!
These are great reminders that I will take to heart. Thank you for introducing this new concept of “Kaizen” !
